Please use the Reading Log in a way that best suits the needs of your individual child. Help your child to set a goal of recording time spent reading or listening to books, pages read, or titles of books. If your child is already a motivated reader, you may choose to require additional time, pages or books from what the library requires. Children may choose to count time listening to someone read out loud to them, including listening to books on compact disc. Choose to collect the prizes we offer, or include your own reading incentives, such as a special activity for the whole family or time spent alone with a parent.

Prevent Summer Learning Loss

Information about the summer slide presented by Winnequah Elementary School teachers and guidelines for summer reading presented by Monona Library Youth Services Staff.

Summer learning loss, sometimes called summer slide, is a very real phenomenon and can affect all children. Studies show that students who do not engage in educational activities during the summer typically score lower on tests at the end of summer than they did at the beginning. It is estimated that two or three months of learning can be lost over summer vacation.

It is very important that students participate in summer educational activities. One study indicated that reading as few as 4-6 books over the summer helps readers maintain their skills and reading 10-20 helps readers improve their skills. The Monona Public Library offers a variety of fun programming, but there are also resources available to you online from BadgerLink (http://badgerlink.dpi.wi.gov/). Available to all Wisconsin residents, BadgerLink is Wisconsin’s Online Library and provides access to learning games, skill building activities, book recommendations, and more.
