Monona Farmers' Market

Sunday, May 27, 2018

If the Monona Farmers’ Market is part of your Memorial Day weekend, it is the perfect place to pause and remember our veterans.

The Dane County Veterans’ Memorial is adjacent to the market at Ahuska Park.  The granite star and vertical panels pay tribute to all of the Dane County residents who have been killed in action since and including WW1. The star monument measures 5 feet tall and 22 feet wide.  It signifies the stars families hung on their windows during World War II -- blue for soldiers who were fighting, gold for those who died.  It is made from granite quarried near South Dakota’s Black Hills.  The memorial was unveiled twelve years ago on Memorial Day.

Fire up the grill this weekend.  The market has a great selection of meats, and some veggies that are great for grilling.  The expert vendors can help you choose what’s right for your gathering, provide excellent grilling tips and offer suggestions for what pairs nicely with your choice.  You’ll find a great selection of grass-fed Scottish Highland beef, chicken and pork at Highland Hill Farm.  New to the market this year is Mapleton Mynd Meat and Produce featuring lamb and mutton as well as fleeces, buntings and cheese boards.  Stop by Don’s Produce, May’s Garden, Valor Acres and Vitruvian Farms where you’ll find organic mushrooms, fresh asparagus, green onions and tomatoes.

Returning to the market this season is children’s author, songwriter and part-time chicken dancer, John Duggleby.  Bring the whole family to enjoy music from the past 150 years, including some of Duggleby’s own compositions.

The market, located at Ahuska Park, 400 East Broadway, is open every Sunday from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm through October 28th.
EBT is accepted.
